I love how Mega Man as a whole peaked aesthetically in the 32-bit era. 8, X4 and both Legends games are probably the best looking games in the series' history.
if only X4 and 8 had voices on par with Legends, but they dropped too early to be dubbed in Toronto (RE2 was the first console game with those VAs, who Capcom used in their Marvel fighting games prior to that, as they were the X-Men cast)
I remember some Something Awful articles from around that time that claimed MegaMan was "ruined by anime," and I guess that's what they were referring to.
You have no idea how Megaman X4 blew my mind as a kid. The only Megaman games I had were 4 and 6 so when I used my birthday money to get X4, and that anime intro cutscene exploded onto my screen, I was blown away. I don't care about people making fun of the voice acting, it was amazing then and it's amazing today. 8 was very good, but the art style from X4 to X6 (and the official art from X7 which continued that art style outside the game) was GODLY
Megaman 8 is so UNDERRATED it's not fair. It's so beautiful, difficulty is fair, anime cutscenes are amazing (besides the eng dub) and the music is a fresh take too.
it's the best soundtrack in the series, perfect robot boy music, beautiful and cute. same goes for the art and the overall voice acting during gameplay
This was the first Mega Man game I actually enjoyed, partly because of just the music alone. I've played previous versions in the past at friends' houses on the NES, but always thought they were hella hard and it turned me off from playing them. My first time playing this one was renting it back in the late 90s, and after the cutscenes, I was hooked. It still took me forever to beat, but it was fun nonetheless. Glad this one's getting some love, dooe video again Ruthless!
This is your April Fool's move, but joke's on you, I'm totally down for you making videos about non fighting games you enjoy or have something to say about going forward in the future as well. Mwahahaha
In short; You should play Megaman 8 due to: -An excellent soundtrack -Gorgeous spritework -Each stage has their own gimmick -Cool anime cutscenes -Replay value in using Bolts for different playstyles. I'm happy someone made a great review on Megaman 8 instead of just harping on it for the voice acting and Frostman's stage. Frostman's stage theme and frozen city aesthetic alone makes me replay the stage.
Hey, there are 12 year olds(definitely still kids) who can draw incredibly well. Frost Man's music is still soooooooooooo good to this day. We might've not gotten Electrical Communication as our opening song, but the one we got is also SO good. *w-megaman*
22:45 As a longtime MegaMan fan, I do wish they'd make the rematches slightly different from the initial encounter. Perhaps give the bosses a new move or two, or a "desperation attack" that does a fair amount of damage, but also keeps the player on their toes. even from a story perspective, it would only make sense: If Wily knows MegaMan can beat his Robot Masters, it would only make sense for him to rebuild them with new tricks and surprises up their sleeves. In any case though, MegaMan 8 was my first classic MegaMan game and I will die on the hill that it was the greatest of the classic series (2nd to MegaMan 11). Thanks for covering it 🙂
The first game I ever personally owned was Mega Man 8 on PS1. I was about 6 in the Christmas of 2000. I was so used to 3D games with games like Smash 64, Spider-Man 1, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater. But Mega Man 8 was unique in that it was 2D and pixel-based and it looked so cool. It looked so cool that I was drawn to my first fighting game, Marvel vs. Capcom 1 because it had Mega Man. This is also the game that's gotten better as I've gotten older, I could play the game better and the cutscenes became funnier. And the music I've loved ever since I was a kid, it's a vibe that none of the other games capture. Man, this game is so good.
I can't believe you went out of your way to add a song from the artists of Electrical Communication opening in your video, BADASS! Besides Mega man 8 I also really like Mega man and bass since it reuses the assets and smooth animations of Mega Man 8. And the soundtrack is SO GOOD! That being said awesome video, I know this is a fighting game channel so I wasn't expecting it😆
I was such a massive Megaman fan that I owned the PS1 and Saturn version of both X4 and 8. They have since become my heirlooms. I have always, always felt that 8 was severely underrated (some of the mags at the time thought it was great though, shoutout to Gamefan!). The sound design is phenomenal and the soundtrack is a treat, as are the beautiful anime cutscenes. The gameplay takes center stage, however. It was a stroke of genius to make Megaman customizable vis-a-vis collectable bolts to buy upgrades, and I really wish that this was expanded upon (I know other games had a shop function, but it was never as fun). I love it to bits. Always will.
I always felt Mega Man 9 was that it was effectively "patient zero" when it comes to what would ultimately snowball into the nostalgia pandering trend of the 2010's: It was the first game with regressions done for the sake of regressions which only got followed up by pretty much every other scrimblo trying to jump on the same bandwagon. Games like Sonic 4: Episode 1, Super Mario 3D Land and Pac-Man Championship Edition DX all tried to grab onto as much nostalgia as possible and it became the norm going into the next decade. Super Mario 3D Land is especially worth bringing up, because outside of the core regressions it made to the 3D Mario formula (Nerfing Mario's moveset, the reliance on SMB3 imagery and locales to the point it's more or less a 3D re-imagining of Mario 3, the far more linear level design with time limits forced on the player at all times) were symbolic of not just the dark age Mario would enter with the Wii U era, but basically how nostalgiabait became the norm for nearly the entire decade for the gaming industry as a whole. And I have a feeling things like 3D Land, let alone Sonic 4: Episode 1 wouldn't exist if it weren't for Mega Man 9's influence. Mega Man 8 on the other hand, was the closest the mainline Classic series got to rivaling Mario or Sonic in terms of production value and accessibility, it's basically the easiest game to recommend for newcomers unlike the first two NES games a lot of the fanbase gassed up back in the day.
I actually like the saturn version of tengu man's theme more than its playstation counter part it has such a nice and chill vibe to it. While the playstation one, in my opinion, tends to make the stage way more obnoxiously iratating than what it needs to be
As a Mega Man fanboy MM8 definitely turned me off for a while because of the cheesy 90s aesthetic but after a while the art style and music grows on you, compared to the Mega Man 1-7, 8 always felt laid back in it's presentation and gameplay. Also the weapons you gain aren't too bad, i especially like sword mans weapon. My only one gripe I have with this game and repeat it with me. ⚠️⚠️"JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE" ⚠️⚠️ Still gives me ptsd 😭
I am so here for the mega man content. Happy you're making content of what you want and don't feel like you have to limit your identity to fighting games
19:24 the first screen wipe in any mega man game is technically flash stopper from mega man 2 since it hits quick man, but the first real one was toad man's rain flush from mega man 4 ^^
Great video as always! Always loved Mega Man 8, probably my favorite in the classic series. I do prefer the Saturn version of Tengu Man myself. Sounds more "Mega Manny?" to me.
I'm so happy to see this! I grew up with the PS1 so this and the X trilogy (my baby brain couldn't comprehend Legends sadly) are deep in my heart. I love how MVC1 more or less has the same depiction of Rock, it's definitive in my mind. The even more prominent similarities to Astro Boy are not lost on me either.
I’m not much of a fan of Megaman’s depiction in MVC1, character design and moveset is fine but he seems too annoying and bratty when he’s usually characterized as humble and polite. Yeah I know y’all are going to murder me for this opinion
@@megapokesonicx I haven't played 7 yet but it looks like a prototype of 8, looks solid for the time. GBA is right next to PS1 for best MM console generation. MMZ is a fantastic refinement of the sidescroller format, and Battle Network has such great gameplay and designs. I didn't play the DS ones because I was burnt out on MM by then and they just looked like retreads to me.

I adore Mega Man 8. When I was a kid the jump to this from the previous games was mind blowing, especially those FMV Anime cutscenes. The music is also incredible in my opinion. I never tire of revisiting it and it's my absolute favorite in the OG series.
I unironically love this game for its artwork and music. I know it's not perfect, especially not the voice acting, but I appreciate all the different things it tried, from having Robot Masters who speak to you while fighting them, to having lush, animated backgrounds, and more.
Mega Man 8 was my entry into the franchise and I rep the Blue Bomber to this day! TO THIS DAY! I LOVE this game. I want to buy it again just to have it on PS Vita.
Mega Man 8 was my first game in the series. And that alone makes it my favorite in the whole series for introducing me to my alltime favorite game franchise. Its criminally underrated imo so its nice that ive been seeing some folks opinions on it soften over time.
Mega Man 8 is actually my very favorite game in the Classic Mega Man series. It was actually quite innovative when they came out. Not to mention how great the music is and all the weapons are really fun to use.
Thanks for advocating for my favorite classic series game... it's not even close for me lol, this one's the best. So hear me out... Water Balloon is actually my favorite weapon, here's why: It's got a ton of ammo. This means that you can mash the mega buster and the special weapon buttons together to create a death ray that will melt just about any regular enemy in the game.
This is such a beautiful game. I wonder if its poor sales were partly a result of a gaming culture going all-in on 3D polygons at the time, where 2D games, even beautiful ones, would be seen as primitive. But with the rise of indie games, gamers are much more willing to appreciate spritework, and I suspect MM8's legacy will only improve over time.
I absolutely LOVE Mega Man 8 with a PASSION. I've beaten it so many times and I honestly have NEVER gotten tired of it. I know it's incredibly divisive among the fan base but I've loved it ever since I first played it way back when it was 1st released. Love the graphics, love the character designs, love the music, love the robot bosses, love the weapon power ups, love the level design, love the cinematics, and yes I even love the SO BAD it's AWESOME voice acting. I remember so vividly when I I first beat it and having both an immense feeling of accomplishment but a lot of sadness cause it was one of those "damn...I beat it" moments being that I relished the game so much. What's cool also is Inafune even stated that it's one of his favorite Mega Man's as well and that the development team had a great time making it. While I have it for both Saturn and PS1, the version the one I play the most is the Saturn version as it's without a doubt the definitive version of the game with irs 2 exclusive bosses of Cut Man and Woodman, a new theme song for Tengu Mans stage, Aqua Man's stage theme is a bit different, more enemies on screen, no slow down, along with a gallery mode and animation mode. Great video 👍
Megaman 8 is one of my favorites of the Classic series! I always loved the music for Frost Man and Aqua Man stages. I'm biased since I enjoy most of the older classic and X games, but it'd be cool to see more vids from you on these and other non-FGs. I had always wondered what the deal was about the anniversary booklet since i had never seen one in real life. Now I want to eventually pick one up.
On the note about Frost Man's snowboard section, I want to mention that the Megaman Legacy Collection also has pretty bad input lag. I wouldn't say it's all too noticeable until the gimmick is reused in the Wily stage, but playing that section emulated after the collection is night and day
One of your videos popped up in my feed and I just clicked on it lol. BTW nice coverage on Mega Man 8. The anime scenes were really cool and the cheesy English dub gave me some laughs especially Dr. Light in his best ''Elmer Fudd'' take. Great job on the video Baberuthless!
5:04 The Mega Ball does come out instantly and is active without kicking it so it can be used as a extremely close range weapon. Doesnt sound amazing but regardless of whether the ball is kicked or not it actually does one more point of damage then a full charge shot, doing 4 instead of 3 damage; also 16:40 another use of water balloon is you can stop the fuses in Gernade Mans stage from destroying the blocks, which is really only useful for like the 1st bolt on the exploding floors part but it's still cool that it's even there even if it's basically useless.
it's been surprising to find that this game is considered a black sheep of the series seeing as how I was obsessed with the mainline NES Megaman games when I was a young kid, but loved this one just as much when it came out. I was ready enough for Megaman's PS debut that I preordered it at EB and got it on the day it came out! I don't think it's just nostalgia either because when I revisit this it's always solid.
I love this game. It was the first classic game I owned. Thought it was awesome that the ps1 disc could be put into a cd player to listen to the end credits theme. Also, the Water Balloons do put out the flames from those fire-totem enemies in Sword man's stage stopping them from attacking for a bit. Watter Balloon also puts out the fuses/wicks in Grenade man's stage after they've been lit up by the little fire mets. Additionally, in the later part of that stage when the fire mets drop down from their receptacles in the ceiling, if you hit those with Thunder Claw, it'll delay them from dropping mets. Not too useful all things considered lol, but those small little inclusions I always thought were neat.
I still have PTSD from "jump jump, slide slide!" Those parts of the game may be easy for some people but for me it was rage inducing. I might have actually succeeded in doing it once a long time ago. Still, I really love that game because of how much it embraces that anime look, right down to the cut scenes. And I love the soundtrack. I was obsessed with 8 and X4 when they first came out.
YOU'RE THE BEST I ALREADY KNOW WHY EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY MEGAMAN 8! THIS GAME IS AMAZING! THE VIBES ARE SPECTACULAR! THE BOSSES ARE FUN *Until you hit wily :3* Just thank you for bringing this game up as I don't get many people that do 💔
This game is amazing and beautiful. I think most of the hate comes from NA, with anime still not being big yet there in '97. In LatAm we DEVOURED this game, mostly because we usually got pirated copies of the Japanese version with the cool OP/ED songs, and we were already well into that stuff in here. Seeing that intro was what made me trade in my N64 for a PS1, top 3 lifetime decisions. I wish they had continued and improved on this artstyle instead of going for the easy nostalgia cashgrab of going back to 8-bit style for MM9 and 10, and I'm not really into the style of 11, even Megaman Powered Up for PSP has a style I can relate more to than 11. I also love MM&B which I'd say gets even more flak than this one. Also, thanks to your video I learned that the Saturn version has additional content, might have to play that one sometime soon. Bless Capcom at that time for pushing for this game to happen, because Sony ALMOST blocked it from happening since they didn't want 2D stuff on their "cool 3D game system".
It probably was early content creators in NA I’d blame for its negative reputation. I remember they would just say it’s the worst one and it’s bad without going into why. Also powered up style was fantastic! That might be one of my faves as well 😁
Been a fan of MM since the NES days and will defend mm8 until the end of time. I think its a great addition to the series and stands at the top of the series with mm2,3,9, and 8 being the major hitters. I know everyone has their own taste but its wild to me people have dislike for this game. The music is awesome, the graphics are beautiful, the stages are fun, the weapons are great, the bolt system is such a step up from 7, and the overall presentation was just super solid. Ill never get the hate.
Crazy to think there was a time where we were spoiled for choice between this, X, and Legends. The overall Mega Man product hemorrhaged in the mid 2000's, but even then it was mostly hitting the right notes.
I actually went and played every main megaman game on the switch specifically due to nostalgia of those old classic collections on GameCube. I loved messing around and didn’t understand what was going on in video games yet so I’d just play the tutorial of 8 with the soccer ball all the time. Megaman was dope back then because of the level select so I could see new stuff.
This video taught me you can re-direct grenades with the thunder claw... Thats such a cool idea for a weakness. I do feel like 7 and 8 had the best boss fights in the series, it felt like you were always on the move and attacks were avoidable with experience.
So-okay. Funny thing about Saturn games! They are an absolute *PAIN* to either emulate or decompile due to a Roman Scroll’s list of issues. Take your pick from: Physical security on the disks, the system having two CPUs, the Saturn used a unique method to render graphics, etc etc. It’s a shame because there’s all kinds of games and versions I’d like to see but… It’s *rough….*
While I enjoy all the games in the classic series, 8 is my favorite by far. The anime scenes are awesome, the art and aesthetics are absolutely peak for the franchise, and it probably has my favorite loadout of special weapons in the whole series. I'm really glad to see it getting more appreciation recently! That said, I have now idea how 2004ish me managed to beat Megaman 8 on GameCube with that input lag and the infamous button flip, but I did it xD
I love how Mega Man as a whole peaked aesthetically in the 32-bit era. 8, X4 and both Legends games are probably the best looking games in the series' history.

Thanks for this video! This was the first Classic Mega Man I beat. It’s my favorite and so underrated.
When I was a lil kid my sisters orthodontist had a PS1 in the waiting room with this game as one of the discs they had. It was cool playing it
She can do it all!
Mega Man 8 is PEAK! This was a great video, glad to see someone else give this game the credit it deserves 😎
Thank you! I’m so glad more people are catching on to m8’s glory 😁
It was my first ever megaman game ever!! I enjoyed playing it on my ps1 slim back in early 2000
I wouldn't say it's all too noticeable until the gimmick is reused in the Wily stage, but playing that section emulated after the collection is night and day
Thank god i have a Saturn version with a undub mod!
Probably the ideal way 😅
This is unironically my favorite Mega Man game.
Thanks! lso right there with you, absolutely love the cheese of that voice acting 😆
Aqua man is reason enough
"I'm Aquaman, but you can call me Handsome Guy!"🌈
I loved how Megaman 8 looked. I thought it was cool. It's unfair that people hate on it but I'm happy whenever anyone shows it some love.
FINALLY someone else appreciating Megaman 8 this game is very special to me. A PSX game i very much enjoy.
for me this has always been my favorite megaman game.
I like the saturn tengu man better actually
Mega Man and Bass has my favorite MM ost but this is my number 2. Especially the stage selection, intro, Frost, and Aquaman stages.
Let's be honest: Both Tengu man stage themes are BANGERS
I'd say the big reason one should play Megaman 8 is to enjoy the stellar voice work of Dr. Light!
Baberuthless talking about Mega Man?! I did not see it coming but I gladly welcome it.
I love Mega Man 8. Awesome sprite work, great boss roster and weapons, and sick soundtrack.
8 was great wtf people on about
Ah yes, my favorite of the series and the best one I've ever played to this day!
I loved Mega Man 8! Astro Man is literally my spirit animal 😆
YOU'RE THE BEST
I ALREADY KNOW WHY EVERYONE SHOULD PLAY MEGAMAN 8! THIS GAME IS AMAZING! THE VIBES ARE SPECTACULAR! THE BOSSES ARE FUN *Until you hit wily :3*
Just thank you for bringing this game up as I don't get many people that do 💔
This game is amazing and beautiful.
That might be one of my faves as well 😁
My favorite of the mainline mm games. Beautiful 32 bit sprites and awesome soundtrack
The background music trippyasf😂 6:00
Crazy to think there was a time where we were spoiled for choice between this, X, and Legends. The overall Mega Man product hemorrhaged in the mid 2000's, but even then it was mostly hitting the right notes.
My first megaman game and I still highly enjoy it over 1-6 and 9-10.
CRUSH EVERYONE OH HO HO HO
Grenade man is my favorite robot master in this game, his stage music is so goooood
Megaman 8 was way too underappreciated back then regarding its aesthetics and graphics shift. Great video btw! 👍
MegaMan 8’s cutscenes live in my head rent free.
Best music, best graphics, and best in terms of difficulty. I will die on this hill.
This video made me wanna replay Megaman 8 soon
Hell yeah.
Some motion for MegaMan 8
Trying to do my part in undoing the bad propaganda this game got
this megaman my fav.
still pleasing to the eye even today and ost was awesome
JUMP JUMP 🗣
SLIDE SLIDE 🗣
While I enjoy all the games in the classic series, 8 is my favorite by far. The anime scenes are awesome, the art and aesthetics are absolutely peak for the franchise, and it probably has my favorite loadout of special weapons in the whole series. I'm really glad to see it getting more appreciation recently!
That said, I have now idea how 2004ish me managed to beat Megaman 8 on GameCube with that input lag and the infamous button flip, but I did it xD
mm8 is my first mm original game. i never played the nes mm, only x series. i dont like the nes sprite ones
